The tonal painting system that I use was taught to me by Joseph Allworthy, (1892-1991) a noted Chicago painter. He was himself a student of Max Meldrum (1875-1955) a famous Australian teacher and painter of the time. It was Meldrum who devised the system of oil painting that I employ. It is a purely visual, tonal approach, using no lines or drawing whatsoever. Students are trained to see, analyze and translate the subject into the canvas using a variety of unique methods. The result is a very convincing rendering of the subject which can be executed in a very loose or sketchy style to a more refined, realistic treatment. According to my personal research, this method id nearly identical to that used by acclaimed painters of the past such as Sargent, Corot, Velazquez, Titian, Zorn, Constable, Chardin and Raeburn. Meldrum was merely the first to organize these visual and painting techniques into a coherent system.

Previous training is not necessary in order to grasp these principles. In my classes I have taken students who have had extensive training in drawing and painting and students who have had no training whatsoever, and found that both were able to produce equally excellent results. We are not born with the ability to paint - it is an acquired skill. With this unique painting method, correct proportions occur automatically as a result of painting tones and shapes. Color ceases to be a problem. A logical color system is used, enabling students to quickly learn to identify and mix the colors that match those seen in the subject that they are painting. Using this approach, an artist will be able to paint any subject, whether it be portrait, still life, or landscape equally well, because even though the subject may change, the same method applies to all. This system of placing tones, shapes and colors in a non-linear way has produced some of the greatest paintings in the history of art. Unfortunately, in our day, it has become something of a lost art, and that is why I continue to teach this wonderful way of painting.
