Instructor: M. Kathryn Massey, OPA, AA
Class Code: MM101
Workshop Fee: $550
Medium: Oil and/or Pastel
Date: Monday - Friday, May 3-7, 2010
Time: 10am-4pm each day
This workshop for adults will use the still life as subject. Students will explore the means to achieve a believable realistic oil or dry pastel painting through these elements:
Value, color, edges and paint quality (impasto) and brushwork. Emphasis will be placed on painting with a concept; a plan to prepare then realize a painting. Teacher demonstrations and daily critiques will focus on the relationships of size/ placement of objects on the canvas; the idea of air and space around those objects (context), color and the role of temperature when thinking about color (not color theory or color wheel); to think about creating a unified picture beyond the literal subject matter; and, finally, to move beyond copying the surface of things. Photographs are not used.
Students will see that paint and brushwork are the two elements that make up a painting; all else is secondary. The finished painting is a culmination of ALL brushwork.
Discussion about taste, aesthetics, transparency in shadows and massing versus line drawing when beginning a painting are some of the areas to be touched upon. This class is for those who want to learn to paint and are willing to think about painting in a new way. Students should bring at least three canvases, NO SMALLER than 11” x 14” and not be overly concerned about bringing home a finished painting per se; rather, to learn and understand new ideas about painting.
If using soft pastels, please have a range of 75-80 pastels, and neutral papers, i.e., a cool gray, a gray-green, a soft umber. No vivid blues, reds, greens, yellows. Taupe is fine. No white!! Nupastels are good for laying the masses, and then, softer, richer pastels are used for the top layer of pastel. Fixative is not used in class.
