Capturing the Light in Watercolor

Instructor: Lynn Ferris

Class Code: LF1101

Workshop fee: $220

Medium: Watercolor

Saturday and Sunday, July 23 and 24, 2011 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. each day

Good use of light and shadow can transform a painting from ordinary into extraordinary. Using a limited palette of mainly transparent paints, students will learn to understand light sources, the shadows they create and how they affect the composition, mood and luminosity of your paintings. Lynn will provide reference materials, handouts, and lots of personal attention.

Supplies you'll need:

PAPER: Good quality paper is essential. I recommend Arches 140lb cold pressed.

PAINT: Alizarin Crimson, Thalo Blue (also called pthalo blue or Windsor Blue, green shade), Cadmium Yellow (light or pale), Thalo green (any brand except Cottman), Optional colors (nice to have, but not required): Opera, Cadmium red

BRUSHES & PALETTE:

Whatever you are currently painting with should be fine, however I recommend at least the following: BRUSHES: round, #12 or 14 round, #3 or 4

PALETTE: John Pike or similar is best.

OTHER SUPPLIES:

A number 2 pencil, straight edge, white vinyl eraser, masking tape (optional), a container for water, paper towels and a hair dryer (if you have one), masking fluid (optional)*
